What time it is??!!

The fun thing about working with preschoolers is that they learn the craziest stuff.  I sometimes forget that there was a time in my life that I didn’t know how to tell time or how to do my multiplication tables.  And until I started working at a school with a tight schedule, I had forgotten the importance of the Big Hand.  My three and four-year-olds have no concept of time and they most definitely cannot tell the time by looking at a wall clock.  But they know all about the Big Hand.  You know, the minute hand on any clock.

I’ve started doing this thing where I teach them to watch the wall clock.  For instance, we eat lunch at 12:10.  When the Big Hand gets on the six, my children have learned that it’s time to start going pottie and they take turns going.  They also know that EVERYBODY must hurry and use the pottie before the Big Hand gets to the nine; because that’s when we go to story time with Mrs. Kitty.  After nap is over at 2:15, they know that when the big hand gets on the six, it’s time to clean up as fast as they can and line up at the sink to wash their hands.

It’s so great!  When the Big Hand starts getting close to the six, they start pointing and saying “Miss Leah, it’s almost there!  It’s on the five!”.  It’s hilarious.  And also, I think it’s good practice for them as far as reading a clock and getting some concept of time.

Thanks, Big Hand!
